Alaska is a far way from the midwest. It's a beautiful place with a strong people. They are fiercely proud of their homesteads at the far edge of the new world.
I re-discovered the fact that my great-uncle, Lee McKinley lived the best of his days here as a dentist and was politically active as the territory became a state.
Oddly, this is the first time as an adult that I've lived with a
short
drive from 2nd and 3rd cousins.
Recently my cousin Jim came to visit. We visited at Land's End Restaurant in Homer. It was great. JImmy and I agreed that we couldn't agree what the juvinile fight was in the bathtub over 35 years ago in Durango. We agreed that "those kids could just get over it."
Not long after my family moved to Homer, Jessica sang this song with
her
2nd grade classmates in a school performance.
Later one evening I stood outside and saw the big dipper high overhead. The lyrics came back to me in pieces and it moved me to want to play it on the guitar.
It's kind of tricky, and I often slip into a similar sounding hymn. I can't think of which one, so it weighs even heavier on my memory.
Alaska's Flag
Written by Marie Drake
Composed by Elinor Dusenbury
Eight stars of gold on a field of blue -
Alaska's flag. May it mean to you
The blue of the sea, the evening sky,
The mountain lakes, and the flow'rs nearby;
The gold of the early sourdough's dreams,
The precious gold of the hills and streams;
The brilliant stars in the northern sky,
The "Bear" - the "Dipper" - and, shining high,
The great North Star with its steady light,
Over land and sea a beacon bright.
Alaska's flag - to Alaskans dear,
The simple flag of a last frontier.
