TRAIL TO PICACHO
Born in Picacho, New Mexico, near Hondo and Fort Stanton, Daniel Perea Sandoval rode the trails from Roswell to Santa Fe at a young age. In later years he would ride from Santa Fe to La Junta over the mountain with his son Juan Jose (John) Sandoval in the time of seven days. Daniel gathered stray cows, mavericks and stray horses. The branded stock would be returned to the owners for a finder’s fee and the unbranded stock, he would sell. There was much competition from other free riders, cowboys out of work or between jobs. There was a lot of strife, born out of envy for his uncanny ability of locating the stock. He was often accused of theft, for which he was sentenced to be hanged, but instead he served time at the Santa Fe Territorial prison.
TRAIL TO PICACHO, is a work of fiction based on facts and the life of Daniel P. Sandoval, a hard man from hard times. He was my grandfather.
