TRAIL TO PICACHO, A Story of the Southwest.

TRAIL TO PICACHO

Born 1889, in Picacho, New Mexico, near Hondo and Fort Stanton, Daniel Perea Sandoval rode the trails from Roswell to Sante Fe since he was very young. In later years he would ride from Sante Fe to La Junta over the mountain with his son Juan Jose, my father, in seven days. Daniel gathered stray cows, mavericks and horses.  The branded stock would be returned to the owners for a finder's fee and the unbranded stock would be sold wherever there was a market for them. There was much competition from other free riders, cowboys out of work or between jobs, so there was some strife and accusation of theft borne out of envy for his success at gathering the stock. It was a hard land, the area of the Capitan Mountains and hard times and it took hard men to survive the strife.

Trail to Picacho, is a fictional account based on the life of Daniel P. Sandoval, a hard man from hard times and he was my grandfather.

TRAIL TO PICACHO is still in progress and may be completed Fall 2012.
