The
Chugach National Forest has
stepped forward to provide increased access to snow and
weather
observations for the area between Girdwood and Turnagain Pass. The
Friends of the Avalanche Center is helping to
expand those observations by working to install at least two more
weather stations one north and one south of the current observational
network. Our first order of business is to work with NRCS and Chugach
State Park to get a new snow measurement near the Glen Alps trailhead.
A long overdue observation that demonstrates how the Friends of
the Avalanche Center intends to partner with other organizations
in the community that have overlapping missions.
Next up is a station
farther south. The areas of most interest are
circled on the map. We are looking to pick a plum: easy access, power,
a representative observation and if we can find them, a partner and
line of site to AKRR or DOT radio links. Ideas? Are you interested in a
volunteer field project? Fire off an e-mail.
