CONTRA BOREALIS DANCERS

Minutes Meeting---September 13, 2005

1. Those present: Sue Cole, Jim Deininger, Alan and Barbara Braley, John Adams and Marty Baldridge (Isabelle Mudd joined us for part of the meeting.)

2. Time, Date, Place of next meeting: Tuesday October 18, 2005 Alaskaland 5:30 P.M.

3. Minutes: corrections? none.

4.Treasurers Check-in: Alan gave us a draft budget from dance camp, about $1000 in the red. It may change a bit when he hears from the cooks again. He and Stan Read will go talk to the Boy Scouts about next year, since there are plans to renovate part of the lodge, which may make it unavailable for dance camp. We will have to add separate insurance for next year's camp. We owe hall rent for May, June, July and August.

5. Membership Check-in: Jim gave us an updated membership list. Hall insurance is due this fall. It will be $4.10/member and Isabelle needs the list by Nov. 1.

6. Newsletter Report: We need a new newsletter person.

7. Dance master Check-in: We need a new dance master.  Suzy Fenner was not at the meeting, but she expressed an interest in being dance master.

8. Webmaster tells all: John has added minutes from Jan-May of 2005 to the website. He will check and see if there is a link from our page to the new dancealaska.org site for the hall. He will put the newsletter on our website as well, when there is one.

9. Publicity Report: Barbara reminds us about the free contra dance at Wood Center co-sponsored by UWA on Sept. 17. She will send a note out to the list, which will also include the fall schedule. There may be a set-up and take-down fee for the ballroom, but she thinks UWA will cover it.

10. Scheduler's Report: We need a new scheduler. In the meantime, John has done the fall schedule and it is posted on the website. There was discussion about opportunities for new callers to call. We agreed that new callers could work out something with the scheduled caller of the evening, to call a few dances maybe during the early part of the dance.  Ken McFarland volunteered to call a dance for us on Nov. 19, but he does not want to be in the regular mix of callers.  John did not hear back from Betty when he sent out the call for callers.  She told Marty last November that she wanted Polar Drive to have an equal chance to play for dances.  She said if the band schedule is done first, then she could call when Polar Drive isn't scheduled to play (when she is availible.)

11. Corporation Report: Lois Henderson volunteered to be the new corporation representative, but Jim went to the last two corporation meetings.

Club reports: Ballroom and Santas will be starting fall classes, Prospectors have Tuesday evenings, Tai Chi has a workshop the 17 and 18. Treasurer's report: The summer painting of the hall was done under budget, annual dues are coming up, the janitor's contract bids are due Nov. 30, and the benches on the porch will be painted. The Ballroom group will put in an outlet for the disco ball. Any shoes or other items left in the hall will go to Value Village at the end of the month. There was discussion about buying a hearing enhancement system for the hall, including a transmitter and 4 headsets to loan to dancers who have trouble hearing the caller (see Williams Sound on the Internet.) Remember to use no soap on the dance floor (someone spilled some and Bill needed to mop--made the finish tacky.) Isabelle reminded us about the new website and forums at dancealaska.org.

12. Student Rep Report: Pat Webb was not able to be here.

13. Dance Camp: Dance camp was a wonderful weekend. We need a new head for next year. Stan has the dust mop and fan and will bring them back to the hall.

14. Anything Else? Larry Unger/ Eden MacAdam-Somer special event-- October 27, 28, 29: Barbara has gotten some information from Charley Basham and from Cynthia Steiner (who is not able to help.) Barbara is waiting to hear from Larry and Eden and from the Arts Association (to see if they will have funds for work in the schools.) Kari Lundgren will be coming from Sitka to call; Stan Read has bought the ticket already. We have the hall booked for Friday eve, all day and eve on Sat. Marty offered to help with scheduling--she will see what it takes to have a concert Thursday eve Oct 27 at the College Coffee House. Other ideas include a Swing dance Friday night Oct 28 (Sue would teach from 7-8) and contra dance Saturday night Oct 29. Workshops during the day on Saturday could be guitar, banjo/ fiddle duets, fiddle improvisation, swing fiddle, Eastern European fiddle, tips on practice. Kari might be willing to give a callers workshop or call some particular kind of dance for a workshop.

Adjourned at 7:05 PM.
