Contra Borealis Board Meeting
Minutes for Mar. 9, 2000
by Sue Cole, Board Secretary
- Those Present: Steve Wilson, Sue Cole, Gary Newman, Stan Read, Jim Deininger, Barbara and Alan Braley, Lynn Basham, Cathy Walling, Suzy Fenner (arr. 5:50pm).
- Time, Date Place of next meeting: Wednesday, April 12, Alaskaland Dance Hall 5:30 pm.
- Treasurer's check-in: Just recently received the books from Dennis, no firm balances as yet, but making progress. New signers have been arranged at the bank. There is about $2200-$3000 total in the bank, but that includes some tickets already purchased for DCN 00. Do we need to do a fundraiser to build up the treasury? Have the caller announce membership renewals.
- Membership check-in: About 192 members including January's figures. The new list is out.
- Webmaster tells all: Emails going out typically after each meeting with positive feedback. Everything going smoothly on updates.
- Dance Master check-in: okay so far, no problems except the money sheet is hard to understand - he will work with Alan to re-vamp it if necessary.
- Special Events: April 15th will be a swing dance (Jeff Sauer calling) because the bands will be in Juneau for Folk Fest. Kathy is contacting Brian Demarcus and Fat Weasel to see if they will be doing one of the Summer dances. Our expenses should not be as high, because they will be driving. Stan would like help re-doing the flyer for Dance Camp 2000; we need an auctioneer for the fundraiser at the dance camp. Their next meeting is Thurs. Mar. 23 at 5:30 pm at the Alaska Coffee Roasting Co. on Geist Rd.
- Board nominations: Steve is stepping down as coordinator. We need a student rep or a new newsletter person. Cathy would like to step down from Common Sense, Steve would like to slide into it.
- Publicity Report: Barbara has not been having any feedback from the student club, but other than that okay. She needs to be notified of publicity upcoming.
- Corporation Report: Todd is out this spring, Lynn will fill in. At the next meeting we need to show some support - there is a movement to change the name of the Hall again from the Alaskaland Dance Center to the Square and Round Dance Center. Gary will send an email to pass our unanimous objection to the change. There is a problem with the water at the Hall. When we come in, we need to turn on the water in the basement, and when we leave, we need to turn it off.
- Student Rep Report: The new student rep (Cynthia Buchanan) decided she didn't have time after all, and it is back to Suzy again. Steve made a suggestion to make some coupons for a free dance to give to students if they show up at a student meeting and sign up for membership. Suzy has found an "in" with other clubs to get dances sponsored at the Wood Center. She has signed up for one on the second Saturday in May. Steve made a point that we don't want to have too many dances in a row so that everyone suffers, plus that is right around graduation and attendance would likely be light. That date was scotched.
- Newsletter: when do we want the next one.
- Gary mentioned receiving an email from George Sleichter about the Alaska Fiddle Camp getting underway in June in Wasilla. Gary passed printed data to Suzy Fenner for the next newsletter.
- Meeting was adjourned.
