30th Alaska Folk Fest (2004)

How it All Began...

Our band was started in January of 2004, because of the one trip we look forward to every year, the Alaska Folk Festival in Juneau, Alaska. In the past years we had gone down to Juneau in a huge group led by our instructor, Susie Hallinan. Susie couldn't come to Juneau in 2004, so we decided to go on our own. The five of us, Kyla McGroarty, 14, Jody March, 15, Collin Stackhouse, 17, Katie Sousa, 17, and Aurora Bowers, 14, decided to create a band, simply for the amazing experience of the Folk Fest. Once we came up with an [awesome] name, we signed up for a slot in Juneau, and crossed our fingers. Aurora's brother, Ryan, 16, joined with us to add some great bodhran rhythm and other percussion. When the letter from Juneau came, we were all ecstatic, since it was the start of some great music that will (hopefully) last a long time! Since then, we have added another member to our band, Kari Martin, 17, who completes our band with her keyboard, guitar, and vocal skills.
