Snow Observers

1.The CNFAIC provides snow and weather information for a huge area. As everyone familiar with snow knows, conditions can vary greatly over relatively short distances. To help the public better understand how variable the snowpack is, the avalanche center is sponsoring an observers program for the next  three seasons. The goals of the program are:
  • To increase the number of quality snowpack and avalanche observations. We would like to find experienced backcountry skiers, boarders and snowmachiners who are interested in making snowpack and avalanche observations. The Friends of the Avalanche Center  will provide training to assure that participants are well qualified to make good snow, weather and avalanche observationscrown_face_slope_angle
  • 2.Provide a means to share snowpack and avalanche observations in a timely manner. The Friends of the Avalanche Center will provide training and hardware to allow observers to use SnowPilot to record observations and submit them to the avalanche center over the internet
Currently, the friends group and the National Forest are working on a set of observer training guidelines. If you think you would like to formalize your snow geek status by digging around in the snow while out recreating, contact Observers Email.
